5 Possible Reasons Your Air Conditioner Is Blowing Warm Air

February 3, 2023

Air conditioning is great, but AC problems are fairly common. According to Consumer Affairs, air conditioner repairs are the second most common type of home repair, with about 24% of homeowners needing AC repair. If your AC is blowing warm air, here are five potential causes.

1. Low Refrigerant

If your air conditioner gradually lost cooling power after several years of use, there's a good chance you're dealing with a lack of refrigerant. Low refrigerant is typically caused by a refrigerant leak somewhere in your AC unit, so make sure you address the leak in addition to having your AC recharged.

2. Dirty Air Filter

A dirty air filter can restrict airflow to the point that your AC might blow warm air. Generally speaking, you should change your air filter at least once every six months. If you have pets or children, you should change your air filter even more often. Regularly replacing your air filter also promotes better indoor air quality.

3. Bad Compressor

The compressor inside your AC is an essential piece of the puzzle, so a bad compressor can cause your AC to blow warm air. A bad compressor means your AC can't convert refrigerant to cold air, so it simply blows warm air into your home instead.

4. Clogged Condensate Line

Air conditioners remove humidity from the air, and that moisture is drained through the condensate line. If this condensate line becomes clogged, your AC can't reduce the humidity of the air, which causes it to blow warm air instead of cool air. Fortunately, cleaning a clogged condensate line is one of the simpler air conditioner repairs.

5. Duct Leaks

Because poor airflow can cause your AC to blow warm air, your problem could be a result of a duct leak. When your ductwork isn't properly sealed from start to finish, it can allow ambient air to run through the ducts, which isn't as cold as the air from your AC.

When you own a home with an AC, it's your job to know about common air conditioner repairs and problems. When you think you've got a problem, it's time to call an HVAC technician to get your AC unit fixed or replaced.
